Wayback Burgers Shakes Up the History Books with 2019 “Free Shake Day” Promotion

Wayback Burgers, America’s Favorite Hometown Burger Joint and one of the nation’s fastest-growing burger franchises, celebrated the first day of summer 2019 in a record-breaking way with the chain’s annual “Free Shake Day” promotion.

On the summer solstice (Friday, June 21), all participating Wayback Burgers locations handed out one free 12 oz Black and White Milkshake per guest. Kicking off the summer the right way, Wayback Burgers locations from coast to coast gave away more than 28,000 shakes on “Free Shake Day,” setting the record (by far!) for the biggest top-line sales day for the system thus far in 2019. The sales represented a 6.8 percent increase compared to the second-biggest sales day.

Wayback Burgers CEO John Eucalitto says “Free Shake Day” is an important tradition and a big reason why Wayback Burgers has established itself as America’s Favorite Hometown Burger Joint.

“Our annual ‘Free Shake Day’ promotion is one of our favorite days of the year. It’s all about reminding our guests of the old-fashioned burger joint they remember, filled with classic shakes, tasty burgers and great memories shared with friends and family,” says Eucalitto. “As the numbers show, this is a beloved, nationwide tradition, and we are already looking forward to next year’s promotion.”

All participating Wayback Burgers franchises loaded up on 50 times the required supply of milkshake ingredients just for “Free Shake Day.” It took more than 2,608 gallons of ice cream, 154 gallons of Hershey’s™ Chocolate syrup, 80 gallons of Monin French Vanilla syrup and 848 gallons of whole milk to make the 28,000 Black and White Shakes.

While “Free Shake Day” has been a massive in-restaurant success for years, Wayback Burgers has generated significant PR, digital marketing and social media traction in recent years as well. Consider that this year’s “Free Shake Day” promotion resulted in:

  • 70 percent increase in transactions and 20.92 percent increase for overall sales compared to the last four Fridays
  • Two to three times more website views than average
  • 256,001 reach on six Facebook posts
  • More than 4.7 million impressions of floating ads on Facebook and Instagram
  • Coverage by more than 80 different media outlets
  • National stories on USA Today, YAHOO Finance, QSR Magazine Online, Franchising.com and more
